Año 1820. En una plantación esclavista del sur de Estados Unidos, el propietario Warren Maxwell (James Mason) los explota inhumanamente, los dedica a luchar en espectáculos públicos, fomenta la natalidad de las mujeres para vender los bebés. Ignora que su sobrina Blanche está enamorada del mejor de sus luchadores. Se la descalificó por sus desnudos frontales, las relaciones interraciales de amor y sexo, las relaciones incestuosas entre blancos, la ninfomanía de Blanche,...
